Poor quality Wide aspect/Panoramas...
Every time I upload a wide aspect image it is displayed in a
lower quality on the webpage. The wider the image the lower the
quality. Why is that? How can I fix that.
Thanks

Hi Bill,
Apologies for the long delay in getting this question answered. When you say 'lower quality' do you mean that the photo is becoming pixelated, or do you mean that the image's dimensions are becoming smaller?
If you find the image is getting pixelated, can you please tell me which browser you're viewing the website with?
To be honest, this support ticket may not be relevant because we're right in the middle of replacing the Theme editor completely; the themes will be changing along with it. Once the features are online, you will no longer be using this design theme.
In any case, I'd still be interested to know if you are experiencing any image quality loss. Let me know.
Cheers,
Erik

Ya, this issue is somewhat expected. When you upload an image into Fluid Galleries, your original image is processed into several other web appropriate versions - e.g. thumbnail, medium, and large size.
We typically display the large format version image in your public website. The large format version has a good balance between large dimensions, visual quality, and small file size.
I believe the large version image is generated such that the longest side (width or height) will no exceed 1000 or 1200 pixels... something like that.
In the case of uploading large panoramas, this system is working against you. For example, if you upload a panorama image a 8000 X 600px, the resulting large version of that image will be 1000px X 75px... Ouch... very small.
Not only that: If you are using the Horizontal theme, your large version 1000 X 75 pixel image will then be scaled up to match your photo height setting. A photo height setting of 500px, will scale your panorama image back up 6666 X 500 pixels, ultimately distorting and pixelizing your image.
At the moment, the only way to get around this issue would be to tweak your theme such that it displays your original uploaded images, rather than the large format versions. This would solve the issue for your panorama images, but you will have to be responsible for sizing your images for the web... if you upload a 3mb image, that same 3mb image will be displayed on your public website.
I hope that makes things more clear.

We've added support for panoramic images into our next system update. The feature will arrive about a month or so.
